Ruth Hahn-Weinert chair of UN cultural activities at Geneva committee

In light of its vision aimed at supporting openness among peoples and cultures, the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue hosted a cultural and poetic event to mark the World Poetry Day, which coincided with the annual celebrations of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The event, held in cooperation with the UN office in Geneva and Oman's permanent mission to the UN, was opened by Ruth Hahn-Weinert, Chair of the United Nations Cultural Activities at Geneva Committee.
Michael Moller, Acting Director-General of UN office in Geneva delivered a speech and emphasised the UN unwavering support for such initiatives aimed to eliminate narrow-mindedness and contribute to building of dialogue, tolerance and peace culture.
Dr. Hanif Hassan, Chairman of the Geneva Centre in his speech underscored the urgent need to organise similar events especially in the light of what the world is witnessing of the rise of extremism and radicalism in an unprecedented manner. He also paid attention to the centre's approach towards enhancing human rights culture through the promotion of the principles of openness and respect for differences.
He added that such events are in consistent with the main objectives of centre to encourage the culture of dialogue and tolerance as well as extending communication bridges with all peoples across the globe.
The event witnessed the participation of a number of Arab, African, American, Asian and European poets. It was also attended by hundreds of diplomats, representatives of NGOs, academicians, and intellectuals.
