Yemen's Ministry of Defence announced Thursday the killing of eight Al-Qaeda insurgents during clashes with the army in the eastern governorate of Hadramaut.
The armed militants had attacked an army base in the area, and clashes with soldiers posted there led to the killing of the eight gunmen in total, along with two Yemeni soldiers and the injury of two others.
According to the ministry, gunmen belonging to Al-Qaeda also launched attacks on several state and private buildings, and a security forces base, however their attacks were thwarted by the army.
The militants also carried out an armed robbery of a bank in the governorate earlier on Thursday.
The government has sent army reinforcements to the eastern governorate as Al-Qaeda attacks in this particular region have increased as of late.
The move comes after government forces managed to expel key elements of the terrorist movement in the southern Abyan and Shabwa regions of the country.
